The world’s first active reality project is live!
On Sunday 25 November, REVEAL – the worlds first active reality project, involving live performances, large scale projections and an augmented reality treasure hunt launched in King’s Lynn, attracting hundreds of people to the Tuesday Market Place to see the start of the story.
The first episode in what will be an evolving story told over five weeks included a live performance that saw Margaret of Antioch appear high over the heads of the crowd to introduce them to Joe and Maya’s back story, told through a projection by artist Yael Biran, followed by the appearance of Maya, who, concerned about the disappearance of Joe, is given an epic quest to rescue him by Margaret. Margaret of Antioch called on the good people of King’s Lynn and west Norfolk to help Maya in her quest.

Produced by Collusion, REVEAL has been created by a diverse group of artists and creatives industries, half of whom are connected to King’s Lynn and Norfolk. The story writer is James McDermot, an upcoming writer from Norfolk, who has been commissioned by the Royal Court Theatre. James has co-written the story with nationally recognised producer Marcus Romer. Creatives include US artists, Matmos, who have worked on two Bjork albums; experimental band Carter Tutti, ex members of Throbbing Gristle; nationally recognised illustrator, Joe Magee (NY Times, Observer, Guardian); RTS winner and Composer of several BAFTA winning tv films and programmes, Sandy Nuttgens; and Liwaa Yazji, a playwright from Syria whose work has been produced by the Royal Court.
REVEAL is the story of a young woman, Maya, an expectant mother who has travelled from Syria to King’s Lynn after meeting Joe, a backpacker from Norfolk. Joe’s Uncle has offered him some work, but when they arrive, the Uncle tricks Joe and he disappears. Desperate to find him, Maya follows the trail of clues and messages that appear around King’s Lynn and west Norfolk. With the help of her guardian in the sky, Margaret of Antioch, the town’s Patron, and the people of King’s Lynn and west Norfolk, can Maya overcome the challenges and rescue Joe?
REVEAL is a joint project between arts organisation Collusion and the Borough Council of King’s Lynn & West Norfolk. The project is supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England, with additional support from the Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Combined Authority, Discover King’s Lynn, and Norfolk County Council.
